Website Essentials Checklist
Everything your therapy website needs, and nothing it doesn’t
Let me tell you a quick story.
A few years ago, I worked with a therapist who came to A2dd Branding and Digital Marketing after launching her first website on her own. She had picked a beautiful floral template, soft pastel colors, and a big photo of a forest trail… it looked peaceful and professional. But here was the problem: there was no mention of what kind of therapy she actually offered. Her contact form was buried two clicks deep. And the “About” page? Well, it talked more about her love of coffee than her clinical experience.
It looked great, but it didn’t work.
That’s the thing with websites, it’s not just about how they look. It’s about how they guide a visitor (AKA a potential client) to take action. And often, the ones that convert best are the simplest.
So here’s a checklist I give to every therapist we work with when building or reviewing a website:
Website Essentials (AKA: What Every Therapist Website Needs)
1. Clear, Friendly Homepage
Think of your homepage like the front door to your practice. When someone lands there, they should immediately know:
- Who you help
- What kind of therapy you provide
- How to take the next step
Don’t get too poetic or abstract here. People are often arriving overwhelmed, anxious, or mid-crisis. Speak plainly. “I help anxious professionals slow down and find clarity” is way more effective than “Holding space for transformation through intentional reflection.”
Also, your practice name should be right up front. Bonus points if it matches your domain name or branding tone.
2. Services Page with Client-Friendly Language
List the types of therapy you offer, but do it in your voice. Don’t just write “CBT for anxiety” and call it a day. Help your ideal client see themselves in the description.
Example:
“Struggling with overthinking or constant self-doubt? My approach to anxiety therapy can help you create mental space and feel more grounded… even on tough days.”
Simple, clear, human.
3. Contact Info That’s Easy to Find
Make this as easy as ordering takeout. Your phone number, email, and location (if applicable) should be on every page, either in the header, footer, or both.
Even better: Add a booking button or scheduling link that connects to something like SimplePractice, Calendly, or JaneApp. The fewer steps it takes to reach you, the more likely they’ll do it.
4. A Strong “About You” Page
This isn’t just your resume. It’s a chance to make a personal connection.
Clients want to know:
- Why you became a therapist
- Who you love working with
- What makes your approach feel different
Don’t worry, we’ll cover this more in the next lesson.
5. Mobile-Friendly Layout
Here’s the truth: more than 60% of your visitors are likely viewing your site from a phone. If your buttons are hard to tap or the text runs off the screen, they’re gone.
A responsive, mobile-optimized site isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s critical.
6. Calls to Action on Every Page
Think of every page as a stepping stone. Ask yourself, “What’s the next step I want them to take?”
Examples:
- “Book a free consultation”
- “Learn more about my approach”
- “Send me a message to get started”
Make the action clear. Repeat it where it makes sense. Your website is a guide, not a guessing game.
7. Legal and Ethical Pages (Don’t Skip These)
Yep, the boring part, but it matters.
Make sure to include:
- Privacy Policy
- HIPAA disclaimer (if applicable)
- Terms & Conditions
- Any relevant disclaimers about scope of services, emergency resources, etc.
If you’re not sure where to start, there are affordable templates available specifically for private practice websites. We often recommend a couple in our resource guide.
Final Thoughts
Your website isn’t just a digital brochure. It’s a first impression, a referral generator, and often the first place someone builds trust with you before they even send a message.
So yes, invest in a logo, choose beautiful colors, and use a calming font if that’s your vibe. But don’t forget the real essentials: clarity, accessibility, and a sense of connection.
And remember: if you need a second pair of eyes, A2dd offers a Free Website & SEO Audit for therapists. No pressure, just real feedback. You don’t have to do this alone.
When it comes to creating a website for your therapy practice, there are several key elements that you should include to ensure that your online presence effectively represents your services. First and foremost, your homepage should clearly state your practice name, the services you offer, and how you can help potential clients. Think of your homepage as the virtual front door to your practice, where visitors can quickly grasp what you’re all about. Using language that is straightforward and easy to understand will help attract and engage potential clients who are navigating your site.
Another essential component of your website is a services page that provides detailed descriptions of the therapy services you offer. It’s important to use language that resonates with clients and clearly explains how your services can benefit them. Additionally, your website should make it easy for visitors to contact you and book appointments. Including clear contact information and a prominent booking button can help streamline the process for potential clients and encourage them to take the next step in reaching out for help.
Lastly, your website should be mobile-friendly to cater to clients who are increasingly using their smartphones to search for services online. Ensuring that your website is optimized for mobile devices will provide a better user experience and make it easier for clients to access information about your practice on the go. As a bonus tip, don’t forget to include legal and ethical pages on your website, addressing important considerations such as HIPAA compliance, privacy policies, and disclaimers. By incorporating these elements into your website, you can build trust with potential clients and demonstrate your commitment to upholding professional standards in your practice.
