Work Smarter, Not Harder: Using AI to Simplify Your Marketing
Building Your Online Presence
Website Options for Your Private Practice
Choose the setup that works for you, and where you’re headed
Let’s start with something honest: not all therapists need a fancy website right out of the gate. And not all websites need to cost thousands of dollars to do the job.
But here’s the catch: the type of website you choose should match your goals, not just your budget. Whether you’re just starting out or finally ready to upgrade that DIY project you launched during grad school (we see you), this lesson is all about choosing the right fit for your stage of growth.
At A2dd, I’ve worked with all types of private practice owners, from scrappy solo therapists to group practices ready to scale. And the one thing I always tell them is this:
Your website is like a digital version of your therapy room. It should feel inviting, clear, and trustworthy… whether someone’s been referred by a colleague or just found you on Google at 2am.
- So let’s walk through three real options, real outcomes, and what to expect with each one.
Option 1: Build-It-Yourself Platforms
(Wix, Squarespace, WordPress.com)
Best for: Tight budgets, short-term launches, and therapists who don’t mind rolling up their sleeves
If you’ve got more time than budget, or you’re just dipping your toes into private practice, a DIY platform might be the way to go, for now.
These website builders give you templates, drag-and-drop editors, and just enough structure to build something decent without hiring anyone. They’re fast, cheap, and frankly… a little addictive once you start playing with the design tools.
But here’s what I tell clients who start this way: keep it simple, and stay realistic.
The good news:
- You’ll get something up and running quickly
- Hosting, security, and updates are built in
- You don’t need to know code (or pretend to)
The tradeoff:
- You may run into limits when you want to customize beyond the template
- SEO tools are often basic, so it’s harder to rank in a competitive market
- Moving your content later (to a better platform) isn’t always easy
One therapist I worked with built her first website in Squarespace during a snowstorm in Colorado — and kept it live for three years. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked just enough to get her first 20 clients. That’s a win.
Option 2: Semi-Custom with Support
(Brighter Vision, TherapySites, or similar)
Best for: Therapists who want done-for-you setup with support , but don’t need something super unique
Think of these as a “starter home” for your online presence. Platforms like Brighter Vision or TherapySites cater specifically to therapists, offering quick launch timelines, therapy-friendly templates, and tech support for non-tech people.
For many therapists, this is a stress-free way to get online fast, especially if you don’t want to be Googling how to set up DNS records at 11pm on a Sunday.
What’s great:
- You get structure, support, and industry-specific features
- They usually handle updates, backups, and legal-compliant features
- You’ll get launched fast, often in a week or two
Things to watch for:
- Templates can feel cookie-cutter (and your site may look just like your colleague’s down the road)
- SEO and long-term performance can be limited
- You’re paying monthly, often forever
If you’re planning to build slowly, test your niche, or just get something live while you figure out your bigger vision, this is a solid in-between solution. We’ve worked with therapists who started with these platforms and later came to A2dd for a full rebrand once they felt ready.
Option 3: Custom WordPress Website
(Agency-built or freelance designer)
Best for: Therapists serious about long-term growth, SEO visibility, and standing out from the crowd
Okay… this is where we shine at A2dd.
If you’ve been in practice for a while and are ready to:
- Attract more ideal clients
- Show up higher on Google
- Build a site that feels like you, not like a generic template
…then this is the move.
Custom WordPress sites give you full control of layout, branding, and functionality. Whether you want to add a blog, a course, a scheduling tool, or just create a site that looks nothing like anyone else’s, WordPress is the most flexible and scalable option out there.
But let’s be real. Custom takes effort.
You’ll need to:
- Invest more upfront
- Be patient (a good site takes 3–5 weeks)
- Work with someone who understands your world, not just web design
The therapists we build for often tell us their new site felt like a turning point, not just in their marketing, but in how they felt about their practice. A great website can do that. It reflects who you are, what you believe in, and the kind of clients you want to serve.
Which One Is Right for You?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. It comes down to your goals, your timeline, and your budget.
But whatever you choose, remember this: done is better than perfect.
Your first site won’t be your last. What matters is that you show up online in a way that’s clear, accessible, and professional. Whether you DIY your way to launch or hire a designer for a custom build, just keep moving forward.
And if you ever want a second opinion or an honest review, we offer a Free Website & SEO Audit for therapists. No sales pitch. Just strategy.
