Building a Brand That Feels Like You
Naming Your Practice
Make it easy to remember and impossible to ignore
A friend once told me she spent more time naming her cat than naming her therapy practice. And honestly, I believe her. It’s easy to overthink this part, or brush past it entirely because you just want to get going and start helping people.
But here’s what I’ve learned from years of building brands at A2dd: your practice name sets the tone for everything else. It’s the handshake before the handshake. It’s your first impression in a Google search. And sometimes, it’s the one thing that makes someone stop scrolling and say, “Hmm, this therapist sounds like what I need.”
So let’s walk through how to choose a name that actually fits, not just you, but your goals, your clients, and where you want your practice to grow.
Choosing a name that fits your goals, niche, and clients
When someone sees your practice name, they should get some idea of what you’re about — or at the very least, how they might feel working with you.
Are you helping new moms find their footing? Teens manage anxiety? Couples rebuild trust?
Your name doesn’t have to spell it all out, but it should point people in the right direction. A name like “Calm Minds Counseling for Teens” tells me more than something generic like “Hope Wellness PLLC.” One feels warm and clear. The other could be anything from yoga mats to vitamin supplements.
Take a moment to ask:
- What do I want to be known for?
- Who am I trying to reach?
- What kind of first impression do I want to give?
Write down a few of those answers. You’ll use them in a minute.
Common therapist naming traps
You’d be surprised how many therapists accidentally name their business something that works against them.
Let’s avoid a few common traps:
1. Too clinical Names like “Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Inc.” might check the accuracy box, but they’ll make most potential clients feel like they’re signing up for a lab study.
2. Too vague
“Wellness Connections” or “Pathways and Journeys” might sound poetic, but they don’t say much. What kind of wellness? Who is it for? Why you?
3. Too clever (without clarity)
We love creativity, but make sure your name still lands. Something like “The Inner Compass Project” could be cool… but only if you’re also explaining what that means on your website and brand materials.
Personal name, brand name, or hybrid?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but let’s look at your three main options:
Option 1: Personal name
This works great if you plan to build a practice around you as the expert.
Examples:
- Dr. Jenna Lee Counseling
- Therapy with Michael
It builds trust, especially if your credentials or reputation already carry weight. But it may limit you later if you plan to grow into a group practice or sell online courses under a broader brand.
Option 2: Brand name
This is ideal if you want your practice to have its own identity, or if you see it expanding over time.
Examples:
- Rooted Therapy Collective
- Anchor Wellness Group
It can give you more flexibility and appeal to a wider audience, especially if you don’t want to be the face of the brand 24/7.
Option 3: Hybrid
This middle-ground approach keeps your name in play while still building brand equity around your services.
Examples:
- Mindful Path with Dr. Ramirez
- The Resilient Space by Sarah Kim, LMFT
This option works really well if you’re just starting out and want your name to carry weight but not overshadow the identity you’re building.
A quick word from A2dd
At A2dd, our own name is a little unusual, it stands for Analysis, Discipline, and Dedication. We chose it to reflect our process. We also own a whole family of domain names like brandingforprivatepractice.com and webfortherapists.com, because we understand how important naming and positioning are in a crowded market.
And yes, sometimes people say, “Wait, what’s A2dd?” But once we explain the meaning behind it, that we’re all about finding the right mix of creativity and strategy, they remember us. That’s the magic of branding.
Bonus tip: Create a Naming Style Guide
Even if you’re just one person running a solo practice, it’s helpful to jot down how you want your name and branding to appear consistently across:
- Your website
- Business cards
- Email signature
- Social media bios
- Directories like Psychology Today
Do you want your full name listed with credentials? Are you using the full brand name or just an abbreviation? Keep it consistent. Confusion is the fastest way to lose a client’s trust before they even meet you.
Final Thought
Naming your practice isn’t about being clever. It’s about being clear. It’s about saying, “Here’s who I help, and here’s the space I’ve created for them.”
So take your time. Play around with words. Say them out loud. Pretend a client is reading them for the first time.
And remember, the name you choose is just the beginning. The real work (and the real magic) happens in how you show up. We’ll help you shape the rest of it step by step.
Now go name something beautiful.
