Writing Your Therapist Bio
Say hello without sounding like a robot
Let me tell you about the time I met a therapist at a networking event in St. Pete. She introduced herself with a warm smile and a thoughtful, “Hi, I’m Maria. I help women who are tired of pretending everything’s fine.” I immediately knew what she did, who she helped, and the kind of energy she brought to the room.
Then, I visited her website. Her bio read like this:
“Maria is a licensed clinical social worker specializing in evidence-based approaches to anxiety and mood disorders. She holds a master’s degree from XYZ University.”
Now listen, nothing wrong with credentials (we’ll talk about those in a second), but that intro? It didn’t sound like the Maria I had just met. It sounded like… a LinkedIn profile written by a committee.
And that’s the problem.
So many therapists shrink themselves down in their bio, trying to sound “professional”, and in the process, they lose the warmth, clarity, and confidence that make clients want to connect with them in the first place.
So in this lesson, we’re fixing that. Together.
What Your Bio Should Do
Think of your therapist bio as your digital handshake. It’s the first thing many potential clients will read before deciding whether to book a session, send you a message, or keep scrolling.
You don’t need to write your life story. You just need to answer three basic questions:
- Who are you?
- Who do you help?
- Why should someone choose you?
Let’s break that down.
1. Start with the Heart — Not Just the Title
Yes, list your credentials. Yes, share your experience. But remember, people aren’t hiring a degree, they’re hiring you.
Example:
“Hi, I’m Rachel, a trauma-informed therapist who helps people slow down, reconnect with themselves, and start healing, one honest conversation at a time.”
That opening says a lot more than “Rachel is a licensed therapist who works with adults using a cognitive behavioral framework.” It speaks to how she works and who she helps, not just what her license says.
Quick tip: If it feels awkward to write about yourself in the third person, don’t. Writing in first-person (I, me, my) is more conversational and can feel more authentic, especially in private practice settings.
2. Show What Makes You Different
Here’s a secret: most bios sound the same. That’s why adding you into the mix is so powerful.
- Do you use humor in session? Say that.
- Do you specialize in working with new parents, creatives, or men who hate therapy? Talk about it.
- Do you bring in mindfulness, art, or spirituality? Great, mention it.
At A2dd, we help therapists like you tap into your real voice, not a polished-up, generic version. Because when someone reads your bio and feels like, “Wow, I could talk to this person,” you’ve already started building trust.
3. Add a Personal Touch (Carefully)
You don’t need to share your entire life story, but a tiny window into why you do this work or how you see people can go a long way.
Try something like:
“I became a therapist after watching someone I love navigate anxiety with no real support, and realizing just how much difference one conversation can make.”
Or:
“Outside the office, you can usually find me walking my dog, rereading Brené Brown, or pretending I enjoy meditation as much as I say I do.”
Just a sentence or two helps you sound human, which is exactly what potential clients need.
4. End with a Call to Action
Don’t let your bio just fade out. Invite the next step.
It can be as simple as:
“If this sounds like a good fit, I’d love to hear from you. You can book a free consultation right here.”
It doesn’t need to be salesy. Just make it easy for someone to move forward if they feel ready.
Final Thought
Writing your therapist bio isn’t about being the most polished. It’s about being clear, confident, and real. Let your personality come through. Speak to the people you want to work with. And trust that the right clients will recognize something familiar in your story.
And if you’re still stuck? That’s totally normal.
At A2dd, we help therapists like you rewrite bios all the time. It’s one of the most fun parts of the job — because the moment you stop sounding like “just another therapist” and start sounding like you, everything clicks.
Now go back to your current bio, read it out loud, and ask yourself: Would I hire this person?
- If not, it’s time to write a new version — and you’re ready to do just that.
