Be the Expert: How to Become a Guest on Podcasts and Collaborate with Industry Peers
Let me tell you a quick story.
A while back, I (Dan, founder of A2dd Branding and Digital Marketing) was invited to be a guest on a podcast called Private Practice Program ‘Take The Leap’. It was hosted by Patrick Casale, a sharp, smart coaching and counselor who runs in the same world many of you do. Same story with a podcast called Sht You Wish You Learned in Grad School*. hosted by Jennifer Agee. At first, I hesitated. I had plenty to say about marketing and branding, but… who was really going to care?
Turns out, a lot of people did. I shared a few SEO tips, some insight into how therapists can show up better on Google, and by the time the episode wrapped, my inbox had new connections, compliments, and even a few client inquiries.
And I didn’t have to dance on Instagram to get any of it.
Why Podcast Guesting Works (Even If You’re Not Insta-Famous)
You do not need 20,000 followers or a viral reel to earn credibility in your space.
Podcasts are one of the fastest ways to:
- Build trust with people who haven’t met you
- Get your voice heard by a targeted audience
- Position yourself as a go-to expert in your niche
The best part? You’re speaking to listeners who are already interested in your topic. You don’t have to beg for attention. You just have to show up and speak honestly about what you do, how you help, and why it matters.
How to Find Podcasts That Actually Make Sense for You
Let’s be honest. Not every podcast is a good match. You’re not going on a crypto-bro finance show to talk about trauma recovery (unless you want to, in which case… tell me how it goes).
Start by looking for:
- Mental health or wellness podcasts
- Self-help or personal development shows
- Niche lifestyle podcasts that align with your therapy focus (grief, parenting, neurodiversity, relationships)
Then ask yourself:
- Does the host’s tone match your vibe?
- Would your ideal client be listening to this?
- Is the content aligned with your values?
If you feel like you’d enjoy a real conversation with the host, that’s a green light.
What to Say in Your Pitch (Without Sounding Like a Robot)
Don’t overthink this. Just be human.
When reaching out, write like you’re talking to a peer. You’re not applying for a TED Talk. You’re asking to have a helpful, real conversation.
Here’s a simple structure you can follow:
- Start with a compliment about their show. Mention a recent episode you enjoyed.
- Introduce yourself clearly — tell them what kind of work you do and who you help.
- Suggest a topic you could speak on that would bring value to their listeners.
- Let them know you’re easy to work with (this matters more than you think).
Example:
Hi [Host Name],I’m Dan, a brand strategist who works with private practice owners. I’ve been listening to your podcast for a while, and loved your recent episode on burnout and boundaries. I’d love to join you for an episode to talk about how therapists can use AI and branding strategies to grow their practices (without burning out). Let me know if that’s something you’d be interested in — I can send over talking points or schedule a quick chat.
Keep it short, warm, and respectful. Hosts are often looking for exactly this kind of pitch.
Before You Go On the Air
Yes, you want to sound confident. But more importantly, you want to sound clear and caring.
Here are three simple things to do before you go live:
- Listen to a few episodes of the show so you get a feel for the format and tone.
- Write down 3 stories or examples you’d love to share. (Not a script, just memory triggers.)
- Practice your intro so you don’t stumble over your words when they ask, “Tell us who you are and what you do.”

Podcast guesting isn’t just about promotion. It’s about connection. You’re sharing something valuable, building your reputation, and letting people hear your voice in a way that social media can’t always deliver.
Even if it’s your first podcast, showing up with genuine insight and heart will always land better than trying to sound like an expert.
