Building a practice with purpose

Spoiler: It’s way more than a logo

Let me tell you a quick story.

A few years ago, I was helping a therapist launch her private practice here in Florida. She was brilliant, kind, experienced, and completely overwhelmed by this thing called “branding.” She had just picked out a leafy green logo she found online and asked, “Dan, do I have a brand now?”

I paused for a second, smiled, and said, “Well, kind of. But your brand is more than just the leaf.”

And it really is.

A brand is not just what you look like. It’s how people feel when they interact with your practice. It’s the story your website tells, the tone of voice in your emails, and even how you answer the phone. It’s the vibe. And yes, I said vibe in a professional class, because honestly, that’s what it is.



So… what is a brand?

Think of your brand as the soul of your business. It’s the experience someone has from the moment they Google you, visit your website, read your bio, or sit on your couch (whether virtual or in person).

It includes things like:

  • Your logo, colors, and fonts (yep, the visual stuff matters)
  • Your tone of voice (are you serious and clinical, or warm and casual?)
  • The kind of clients you attract (and the ones who say “this isn’t for me”, that’s branding working too)
  • The promise you make… not in a contract, but in how you show up

A great brand makes someone say, “Oh, I feel like this therapist gets me.”

That’s the goal.

At A2dd, our own brand is built on three values, Analysis, Discipline, and Design. (Hence A2dd.) And our logo? It’s actually based on a chemical molecule. Why? Because we think of branding like chemistry, when the right formula comes together, the results are powerful.

In branding, orange generally represents energy, enthusiasm, creativity, and warmth. It can also convey a sense of playfulness, affordability, and even urgency. The color is often used to attract attention and foster a connection with customers.

 



Why branding matters (even if you’re just starting out)

I’ve heard it before:

“Dan, I don’t need a brand. I’m not Nike. I just want to get a few private clients.”

But here’s the thing. Even if you don’t intentionally build a brand, you’re still creating one.

That blurry headshot? That’s part of your brand.The way your homepage sounds like a psychology textbook? Brand.
That out-of-date Gmail address you use to book consultations? Yep… still part of your brand.

Every detail is a signal. The good news is, you get to control what those signals say.

A clear, thoughtful brand helps you:

  • Attract the right clients (the ones you actually want to work with)
  • Build trust faster (so they’re more likely to book)
  • Charge what you’re worth (people pay for connection, not just credentials)
  • Stand out in a very crowded market

And in today’s world, where people are skimming five therapist websites in ten minutes? Branding is what makes someone stop scrolling and say, “This feels like the person I need.”



Brand vs. Brand Identity vs. Brand Perception

(AKA: Three siblings with very different personalities)

Let’s break this down in plain English.

Your brand
This is the essence of your business. It’s what you stand for. It’s how you make people feel. It’s the emotional connection between you and your ideal client. You can’t always touch it, but it’s always there.

Your brand identity
This is the stuff you can touch, your logo, colors, fonts, photos, your website layout. Think of it as your brand’s outfit. You can dress it up or down, but it should always reflect the real you underneath.

Your brand perception
This is what people think and say about your brand after interacting with it. It’s how you exist in someone else’s mind. And let’s be honest, sometimes it’s not what you intended, which is why being intentional matters.

When these three work together, who you are, how you show up, and how people experience you… magic happens.



Final Thought

Branding might sound like something reserved for big companies with ad budgets and creative teams. But the truth? Therapists need branding more than ever.

Because you’re not selling a product. You’re building trust. And that starts way before someone walks into your office.

So ask yourself:

  • What do I want people to feel when they land on my website?
  • What kind of tone do I use in my writing?
  • Does my brand reflect me, or is it just something I threw together last year in Canva?

And don’t worry, you don’t need to have it all figured out today. Branding is a process. But once you start thinking about it like the soul of your practice (not just the colors on your homepage), it becomes a lot more meaningful, and a lot more fun.
