Building a Brand That Feels Like You

Working With a Designer:
What to Ask, What to Expect

Building a practice with purpose

What to Ask, What to Expect

I once had a therapist tell me she hired her cousin’s roommate to design her logo because “he’s creative and knows Photoshop.” You can imagine how that turned out. Six months later, she reached out to us at A2dd to clean it all up. That story isn’t uncommon. I hear some version of it almost every week.

The truth is, design matters. It’s the face of your brand, the first impression your clients get, and if it’s not done right, it can hold your entire digital presence back. But working with a designer doesn’t have to be overwhelming. You just need to know what to expect, what questions to ask, and how to collaborate effectively.

Let’s walk through how to do it the smart way.

Know Who You’re Hiring (and What You’re Paying For)

There’s a wide range of talent out there. And that’s not a bad thing. The key is knowing what you need and making sure your expectations match your investment.

Here are three common types of designers you might encounter:

  • The newer or DIY designer
They might use Canva or a basic template platform to get things started. This is fine for a temporary fix, but these designs often won’t scale with your business or reflect the depth of your brand. Many of our clients come to A2dd later to redesign work they initially tried to piece together themselves.
  • The seasoned freelancer
These designers usually have a portfolio, a refined process, and a clearer sense of what works. Ask to see examples of past work and check reviews on LinkedIn or Google. They’re often a great fit for solo practices looking for a professional feel without going full agency.
  • The creative agency
Agencies (like us at A2dd) bring in multiple people with specialized skills, branding, strategy, UX, SEO, video production/editing, and project management. You’re not just paying for a logo, you’re paying for an entire brand strategy wrapped in design. It’s an investment, but one that often pays off with better visibility and credibility.

How to Be a Great Design Partner

Working with a designer isn’t like ordering takeout. It’s more like co-creating a dish with a chef. You bring the ingredients and flavor preferences, they bring the skill and presentation.

Here’s how to make it work:

  • Be prepared
Before your first meeting, have your practice name, services, values, and even a few visuals or mood references ready. It doesn’t need to be fancy—just enough to give the designer a feel for your vision.
  • Share what inspires you
If you’ve seen logos, websites, or brands you love, share them. Pinterest boards, screenshots, napkin sketches—all fair game.
  • Ask for a few solid concepts
Two or three logo options are usually plenty. Trust the process. Too many versions can lead to decision fatigue and often muddy the direction.
  • Respect timelines
Creative work takes focus. If you anticipate needing extra revisions or are working under a tight schedule, be upfront about it.
  • Communicate clearly and kindly
Designers are creatives, not mind readers. The best results come from honest, respectful feedback and clear expectations.
  • Expect a questionnaire or discovery session
Any reputable designer or agency will ask thoughtful questions about your business, audience, and goals. If they don’t, that’s a red flag.
  • Understand the value of a rush
If you’re on a deadline, that’s okay. Just know that faster work usually comes with a higher price tag. Prioritizing your project often means shifting others, and that requires planning.

Final Thought: Chemistry Is Everything

Dan always says, “Design without chemistry feels like therapy without trust.” And he’s right. You don’t need your designer to be your best friend, but you should feel a connection and mutual respect.

When it works, it really works. You start to feel proud of how your brand looks and confident about sharing it. And honestly, that energy spills into your marketing, your client communication, and your business growth.

So take your time, ask the right questions, and find someone who gets your vision. When you do, the results won’t just look good—they’ll feel right too.

How Much Does a Custom Website Design or Redesign Cost in 2025?

I found this question on Google with more than 574,000,000 searches and decided to dig a little deeper into this topic.

Your website is your ultimate sales and marketing tool. It serves as the central hub for your inbound marketing strategy and is often the first touchpoint for prospects before scheduling an appointment or reaching out to your team.

As businesses increasingly recognize the value of inbound marketing, websites are evolving to be faster, sleeker, mobile-friendly, and more user-friendly. While this benefits consumers, it also presents a challenge for marketers.

The cost of a website redesign can vary significantly, ranging from a few hundred dollars for a DIY approach to thousands of dollars for a custom-built website for enterprise-level organizations. Let’s break down the expenses into three categories:

  • The level of customization you can achieve.
  • How easy it is to update.
  • What out-of-the-box templates are included.

The cost of a DIY website redesign: Opting for a DIY website redesign may save you money, but it also requires more time and effort to achieve your desired results, especially if coding is not within your skillset.

For startups with limited budgets and no web development experience, platforms like WordPress, Wix, or SquareSpace are popular options. These platforms offer easy installation and access to pre-designed templates. When selecting a template, consider factors such as customization options, ease of updates, and available out-of-the-box templates.

The cost of hiring a freelancer for a website redesign: Hiring a freelance website designer is a step up from a DIY approach. Freelancers offer varying levels of talent and charge accordingly.

Depending on your goals, a freelance website designer may charge anywhere from $800 to $2,000 for a simple website, with higher costs for more complex projects. Working with a freelancer typically involves receiving a few design mock-ups based on your ideas, and then proceeding with the one you prefer.

Keep in mind that freelancers may have limitations in terms of time availability and may not offer extensive insights beyond design and development expertise.

The cost of hiring an agency for a website redesign: Engaging an agency for your website redesign provides access to a team of experienced professionals who are likely familiar with your goals and can design a website tailored to your needs. However, it also comes with a higher cost.

A simpler website redesign through an agency can range from $2,000 to $6,000, depending on the size of your website. Websites with larger page counts, custom functionality, and unique requirements can cost $8,000 or more.

Although the price may seem steep compared to other options, working with an agency goes beyond superficial design. Agencies dedicate equal attention to content, user experience, conversion rate optimization, and other elements that make your website a valuable asset for your business, ultimately helping you achieve your goals.

Putting the price into perspective:

Consider your website as a dedicated team member working tirelessly, promoting your business around the clock. With the right tools, this team member continually improves with minimal supervision. Even when you’re asleep, your website is available to provide information to prospects at any time. While the upfront and ongoing costs of a website redesign may seem significant, the long-term benefits of a well-designed website can far outweigh the investment.

In conclusion, understanding the costs associated with website design or redesign is crucial before embarking on the project. Whether you choose a DIY approach, hire a freelancer, or engage an agency, carefully consider your goals, budget, and desired outcomes to make an informed decision that aligns with your business needs.
