Social Media Basics

Utilizing Social Media for Your Private Practice

Building a practice with purpose

I have an anecdote for you. A therapist I worked with once said, “Dan, I’m a professional listener, not a content creator.”Fair point. But after we cleaned up her Instagram bio, posted a few thoughtful tips, and added a scheduling link, her DMs started filling up with messages like, “You get me. Can we talk?”

Here’s the truth: you don’t need to be a viral star to use social media effectively. You just need to be present, intentional, and authentic.

Social media isn’t reserved for fitness coaches and avocado-toast accounts. For private practice therapists, it’s one of the most underused and cost-effective ways to connect with potential clients. It’s where people are already scrolling when they’re feeling anxious or looking for help. You don’t have to overshare or turn your life into content. Instead, think of it as a digital extension of your practice room, where people can get a sense of who you are, how you communicate, and whether you feel like a safe space.

This lesson will walk you through how to use social media as a professional tool. The goal isn’t to “go viral.” It’s to show up consistently in a way that supports your business and reflects the heart of your brand.

You’re not here to become an influencer. You’re here to become visible to the people who are already looking for you. And with a little guidance, your feed can become a place where real connections begin.

Social media isn’t just for influencers or big brands, it’s a powerful, accessible way for private practice therapists to connect with their audience, build trust, and grow their presence. In today’s world, people are more likely to discover a new therapist on Instagram or Facebook than by flipping through a phonebook. But that doesn’t mean you have to dance on TikTok or share your deepest thoughts every day.

This lesson will walk you through how to use social media as a professional tool, one that reflects your brand, supports your business, and connects with people who are already looking for someone just like you.

Why Social Media Matters for Your Practice:

  • Builds awareness: Potential clients are scrolling every day. Your presence gives them a chance to connect with your voice and values before reaching out.
  • Shows credibility: Regular posting shows that you’re active, engaged, and care about educating and supporting your community.
  • Increases visibility: Platforms like Instagram and Facebook use algorithms to help people find content and services they need. If you’re posting, you’re more likely to show up.
  • Encourages referrals: Past clients, colleagues, or friends may tag or share your posts, it’s word-of-mouth marketing in the digital age.

Where Should Therapists Show Up?

You don’t need to be everywhere. In fact, we recommend starting with just one or two platforms that feel manageable and authentic to you:

  • Instagram: Great for visual content, quotes, tips, and creating an approachable brand.
  • Facebook: Helpful for connecting with local communities, sharing articles, and running targeted ads.
  • LinkedIn: Ideal for therapists who want to network with other professionals, or work in coaching, consulting, or workplace wellness.
  • YouTube or TikTok (optional): If you’re comfortable on camera and enjoy teaching or storytelling, video builds deep trust fast.

What Should You Share?

Your content should educate, relate, and connect, not sell. Try mixing up your posts between:

  • Mental health tips and facts (with clear disclaimers)
  • Normalizing messages (“You’re not alone if…”)
  • Behind-the-scenes of your practice (without breaking confidentiality)
  • Reflections or quotes that align with your values
  • Blog post or podcast episode highlights
  • Introductions: Who you are, what you do, and how to get in touch

Tips for Staying Consistent Without Burning Out:

  • Create a simple content calendar (2–4 posts per week is a great start).
  • Use free scheduling tools like Buffer, Later, or Meta Business Suite to plan ahead.
  • Reuse your content across platforms or turn one blog post into multiple social media ideas.
  • Set boundaries. You’re not obligated to respond instantly, and you don’t have to share anything that feels too personal.

Ethics and Boundaries Matter:

Remember, as a therapist, your presence on social media still falls under your professional guidelines. Avoid giving personal advice, responding to clinical questions, or engaging with clients’ posts. Set clear boundaries in your profile and keep your focus on education, awareness, and connection.

Closing Thought:

Think of social media as an extension of your waiting room, it should feel safe, inviting, and consistent with your brand. You don’t need to go viral. You just need to be visible and authentic to reach the people who are already looking for someone like you.

App Suggestion: Use Linktree if you have multiple social media accounts.

Linktree provides several benefits for individuals and businesses looking to consolidate and share multiple links across various social media platforms where only one link is usually allowed in the bio. It acts as a centralized hub, allowing users to direct their audience to a variety of destinations like websites, blogs, social media profiles, products, events, and more. This simplifies the process of sharing multiple links, enhancing user experience and potentially boosting engagement.
